Discovery Real Time rules

For the quintessential Petrol Head

Just the other day I while was doing my usual before-sleeping channel surfing - already expecting to bitch once more about Sky Cable’s incompetence and lack of cool channels, I chanced upon a rare too-good-to-be-true program which featured metalworks, custom fabrication, wheels, chrome and paint. The show, American Hot Rod. What the hell channel is this? Discovery Real Time. What should have been an hour’s maximum tube time became five.

Car show after car show after another. If not cars, motorcycles - which rules as well. If not motorcycles, then maybe a hint of boats and planes sometimes, which is not too bad either. Overhaulin’, Fifth Gear, Biker Build Off, The Kustomizer, War of the Wheels, just to name a few.

What I could not seem to digest however, was the running announcement on the bottom. Basically, it says the channel will last only until June 30 (today), unless we upgrade to Sky Cable Platinum.

The solution

This totally sucks. I hate this setup. I find myself watching less and less television since Sky Cable dropped bTV, Solar Sports and the other RPN-owned channels. The whole ruckus between Destiny, Sky and Solar drains the life out of Philippine cable television. I don’t really know who’s exactly to blame, but we still enjoy and like Sky Cable’s Zpdee, which is why we remain with them.

To upgrade to Sky Cable Platinum we’d have to pay an extra Php 840 to our Php 520 monthly-worth Silver subscription. With that much I think I’d rather pay for an extra (different) cable provider (e.g. Destiny), with broadband internet - to be dedicated to torrent downloading. Well, all of The Discovery Real Time shows are available for downloading, which is what I’m already doing anyway, so screw you capitalists. Pirates rule.

Personal Watercraft - Your Jet Ski Primer

Just like ordinary vehicles like cars, vans, trucks, SUVs, etc. personal water craft (PWC) or jet skis are vehicles which emit substances into the air and onto the water. It is a natural process of burning fuel needed to convert energy for propulsion and movement.Personal water craft or the more brand name Kawasaki jet ski are small water vehicle capable of holding one or two riders at a time. The riders or boaters either sit or stand on it. It is designed for speed complimenting its sleek and aerodynamic design. It is powered by an in-board engine giving the vehicle thrusts for propulsion and steering.PWCs are high-powered vehicles used for recreation and racing. The US Coast Guard has classified personal watercraft as Class A in-board motor vehicles. And law enforcers are also into the usage of PWCs. They use these vehicles to implement laws and regulations on rivers, lakes, and on the shorelines. Sea rescuers are also using PWCs to secure and save lives. Scientists occasionally also use PWCs for their research trips and investigations. In short, PWCs are a popular choice of vehicle of everybody because of its flexibility, versatility and speed. But how do riders or operators reconcile the demand for owning a jet ski and enjoying its features against the widespread awareness of people nowadays to save and protect the environment by minimizing pollution?Manufacturers of today because of the Clean Air Act enacted in the US in the 1990’s and also elsewhere around the world have already stopped producing two-stroke engines for their vehicles. As verified by scientific studies, two-stroke engines cause more pollution because of the engine’s inability to efficiently burn fuel. Instead of using two-stroke engines a more reliable fuel burning four-stroke engine was developed. Recently manufactured PWCs now have four-stroke engines that reduce air and water pollution. Another factor that must be remembered by jet ski riders and operators is to keep their vehicle’s engines well-tuned and in tip-top shape always. Regular maintenance should be undertaken on the vehicle.Another concern is the force generated by the engine because strong jets of water are pushed out of the vehicle each time it moves. Personal watercraft can be operated even in shallow waters thus disturbance in wildlife like plant growths and sediments is possible. This strong jet can cause disturbances to sediments or increase in water turbidity in shallow water. One way a responsible Sea-Doo rider or operator can do is to stay away from wildlife protected areas or zones as much as he can. He should ride only in main channels or go to where the water is substantially deep. There are several cases in Florida, USA where manatees were accidentally killed because of pwc. The speed and impact of watercraft can injure and kill any animal even large ones like the manatees. One solution is to stay away from animals (if you know it is properly inhabited and populated), swimmers, divers, skiers and fishermen as the vehicle can definitely cause injuries if improperly used.Another issue is fuel spilling in the water. This can be avoided if riders and operators refrain from re-fueling while the vehicle is on the water. Re-fueling should be done while the vehicle is on land where accidental spillage can be controlled. And regular maintenance and check-up should also be done on land. At least maintenance should be done at a safe distance away from the shoreline. We all have the right to enjoy life to the fullest. Enjoying using your Sea Doo for recreation purposes is perfectly legal. However, we also have the responsibility to protect our environment from pollutants. Both right and responsibility can co-exist side by side. It only takes a matter of self-discipline to keep the world safe for everyone. Jet ski dealers and operators should work together for this purpose. We should remember that we only have one earth and we should do everything to keep it healthy at all times not only for this generation but for the generations that is still to come.

What to Know About Car Shipping?

The Bohemian instinct in mankind drives him from one place to another, sometimes for livelihood and yet sometimes to avail better opportunity. When a person well settled in a particular location gets an even better opportunity elsewhere, he or she relocates base along with all belongings, car included. Movers and packers companies take care of everything but shifting a car still remains an issue. Here car shipping companies come to your aid.

If you drive your car to the new destination or take a flight to transport it, it may cost you a hefty amount. Auto shipping is not only comparatively cheaper but also a less stressful option. When you are selecting a car shipping company, ask for the total cost and compare it with other quotes. Go ahead with the deal only when completely satisfied with it.

They may ask you to produce details of your car as well as your journey. Give your departure date, point of origin and destination, make of car and what kind of transportation you want. These car transport companies have provision of delivering the cars to your doorstep or your nearest airport, whatever you prefer. Other than that, there are terminals where your car can be parked till you reach your destination.

Your car would be insured all this while. You will get compensated for any damage that would be caused during this time. You can shop around or go online for quotes by filling up an online enquiry form. Almost all the leading companies have toll free numbers and designated time in their websites for your convenient access.

The Grand Tour

Now the new blog has been online for a bit, I thought I’d show you around the new layout and some of the nifty stuff!
Ok, so here where you are reading right now is the main blog bit where the blogs go for blogging.
Then over on your right you can see some lovely photos, that is the latest 4 photos of my flickr Flat3D set, it is going to be a bit of a “heres an interesting/nice/funny picture I took recently” kind of area.
Just above that are a row of tabs to take you to various blog archives and suchlike.
Below the tabbed box there are a couple of menus: the right hand one has my links and some admin guff for the blog; the left has some interesting articles I have come across while surfing/reading and below that are category links etc for finding things more easily.
Speaking of finding things, the top right of the page has a slightly hidden away seach box for searching (no really) and a nav bar listing pages that are fairly constant (FAQ and About).

So welcome to the new stylee and enjoy your stay, may I particularly recommend the amusing Wired article on lego photographs in the Interesting News section, accompanied by a browse through the links to its right.

If you are reading this on a syndicated site (Facebook or OMF Social) you’ll just have to follow the relevant link to the real blog to see what the craic is!

Hurrah!

The Importance of Topographic Maps

Topographic maps are very specialized maps that are used primarily by hikers and people that are interested in elevation changes in the area that they are in. There are not that many people that read topographic maps and this is primarily because of the misconceptions that are out there about them. Firstly, many people don’t understand the term topographic and then just end up assuming that it is something that they could never get any use out of. Well, the reality is that topographic maps can actually be very useful to a lot of different people because they can give them choices about what to do and where to go that they might not even realize they had.

For example, it was mentioned in the previous paragraph that one group of people that use topographic maps a lot is hikers. Hikers are people that enjoy exploring different sections of wood without really knowing anything about them, so ultimately they are going to want at least some method of navigation so that they generally can find out where they are in case something goes wrong. A topographic map will not only be able to give them that information, but it will also be able to give them information about rock types, elevation changes, gradients and a number of other interesting pieces of information that hikers would find useful.

However, hikers are not the only group that could get use out of a topographic map; they just happen to be the only group that generally tends to know how that map can help them. Consider people that are interested in fishing; specifically, people that like to go to certain rivers and catch certain types of fish. Well, if you are a fisherman, you probably know the habits of your fish of choice. One of those habits happens to be swimming patterns and if you know the swimming patterns of a specific fish, you can use information about the topographic layout of the river to guess where those types of fish might be most common. You can get all the information you need to do that from a topographic map.

These are just two of the many examples of people that can benefit from topographic maps. Generally, if you have a job or a hobby where knowing the lay of the land and how that lay changes is useful, then you are going to definitely be able to get some use out of a topographic map.

Techcraver Review: Garmin Nuvi 350

Introduction:

These days, GPS devices are so affordable and useful that we see them everywhere. The utility of having an updated map with us at all times that provides on-target driving directions is invaluable. However, with there being so many makes and models to chose from, how do you know how to decide amongst all the options?

My first GPS device to review is the Garmin Nuvi 350. The device is currently priced at $200 from Amazon. What do you get for your $200? Lets dig in and find out!

Feature Overview:

Out of the box, the Garmin Nuvi 350 includes:

  • Maps of U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico
  • Turn-by-turn directions, with automatic routing if you change or alter your course mid-trip.
  • Voice-directions
  • Can run off AC power or battery
  • SD slot for loading maps, holding applicable data
  • Photo viewer, MP3/audiobook player
  • Slim 3.87 x 2.91 x 0.97 incy design. Small enough to fit in small bag or purse

Design

The Nuvi 350 is a smart and attractive looking device. The display is bright enough to be seen in direct sunlight and is easily visible at night without being so bright that it strains your eyes. The display can show up to 64K colors and has a resolution of 320 x 420 pixels. The front of the Nuvi is dominated with by the large 3.5 inch screen, with a small foldable GPS antenna. An SD slot on the right hand side of the unit that allows you to insert memory cards for uses that will be specified later in this review. A speaker adorns the back and is very audible, even in my noisy Honda Civic. A suction cup holder attaches to your windshield hooks on to the back of the unit to hold it in place while driving.

Navigation

The Nuvi features the SiRF GPS chip that locks onto satellites quickly. In my experience, when I had a decent view of the sky, ie when I wasn’t in a parking garage or tunnel, I was able to get a satellite lock in under 15 seconds. Garmin has engineered the Nuvi 350 to be quick and responsive, enhancing the usability of the device.

To find your way to a destination, the Garmin gives you many options. I found it most useful to search by business name using the touch screen. Alternatively you can enter in an address or intersection to find your destination and corresponding route. When you search by business name, the search results come back with distance so you know if you type “McDonalds”, the Nuvi will allow you to choose the one you want based on how far away the destination is.

Garmin has designed the Nuvi to be small and usable enough to carry along if you are on foot as well. The maps are so detailed that you can find virtually any business or destination. The SiRF chip is fabulous at using a possible 12 satellites to accurately position you.

One feature of the 350 is turn-by-turn directions with “text to speech” which means the device will pronounce (with mixed accuracy) streets as you approach them. The Nuvi 350 does not handle traffic tracking, but with an optional Garmin GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver, will allow you to see traffic issues and route around them.

I thought I would try to test out the Nuvi’s ability to re-route me if I decided to alter my route mid-way through my trip. This is also applicable if you take a wrong turn or have to take a different route in case of traffic or road closures. To my surprise, the Nuvi 350 would say “Recalculating” and quickly guide me to a new route on-the-fly with minimal delay. In most cases, recalculating would take less than 20 seconds, sometimes taking up to 30-45 seconds to find the next best route when I tried to test it.

Conclusion

The Garmin Nuvi 350 is a functional device that gets you where you need to go with little fuss. Garmin has designed a user interface that allows you to quickly find your route and let you enjoy your journey. The $200 price point is perfect for this fully featured mapping machine.

I would highly recommend this navigation device.

Namibia Vehicles and Agencies that are Willing to Offer Them to You

Namibia is 1 of the countries in the western coast of southern Africa. It isn’t a big country and it is strictly connected with the other parts of South Africa by its history, economy and traditions. The Republic of Namibia is an authoritative name of this state. There are lots of attractions for eco-tourists in Namibia, but the most famous are Sossosvlei, Etosha Park and Swakopmund.

A general reason to call on Namibia is for the views of landscape. For example, the most ancient desert in the world - Namib is the amusement for those people who visit Walvis Bay. One more place of interest that the gulf shows to travelers is a large lagoon and haven of the Atlantic Ocean.

Of course, if you one of the eco-tourists and came to Namibia for observing its sceneries, you may surely require some kind of transport. In this regard, off-road vehicles for hire in Windhoek is a well established activity that gives a possibility both locals and travelers get the transportation appropriate to their needs and funds. Although public transport exists, it does not give the necessary freedom of traveling to fully enjoy the country. (more…)
