The Importance of Topographic Maps
Topographic maps are very specialized maps that are used primarily by hikers and people that are interested in elevation changes in the area that they are in. There are not that many people that read topographic maps and this is primarily because of the misconceptions that are out there about them. Firstly, many people don’t understand the term topographic and then just end up assuming that it is something that they could never get any use out of. Well, the reality is that topographic maps can actually be very useful to a lot of different people because they can give them choices about what to do and where to go that they might not even realize they had.
For example, it was mentioned in the previous paragraph that one group of people that use topographic maps a lot is hikers. Hikers are people that enjoy exploring different sections of wood without really knowing anything about them, so ultimately they are going to want at least some method of navigation so that they generally can find out where they are in case something goes wrong. A topographic map will not only be able to give them that information, but it will also be able to give them information about rock types, elevation changes, gradients and a number of other interesting pieces of information that hikers would find useful.
However, hikers are not the only group that could get use out of a topographic map; they just happen to be the only group that generally tends to know how that map can help them. Consider people that are interested in fishing; specifically, people that like to go to certain rivers and catch certain types of fish. Well, if you are a fisherman, you probably know the habits of your fish of choice. One of those habits happens to be swimming patterns and if you know the swimming patterns of a specific fish, you can use information about the topographic layout of the river to guess where those types of fish might be most common. You can get all the information you need to do that from a topographic map.
These are just two of the many examples of people that can benefit from topographic maps. Generally, if you have a job or a hobby where knowing the lay of the land and how that lay changes is useful, then you are going to definitely be able to get some use out of a topographic map.
